Coaching – Personal, Professional & Relationship

“What is the difference between Coaching and Psychotherapy?”

The International Coach Federation (ICF), which claims to be the largest coaching credentialing in the world, defines coaching as “Partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. Professional coaches provide an ongoing partnership designed to help clients produce fulfilling results in their personal and professional lives. Coaches help people improve their performances and enhance the quality of their lives. Coaches are trained to listen, to observe and to customize their approach to individual client needs. They seek to elicit solutions and strategies from the client; they believe the client is naturally creative and resourceful. The coach’s job is to provide support to enhance the skills, resources and creativity that the client already has.”
The American Psychological Association (APA) defines Psychotherapy as “Any of a group of therapies, used to treat psychological disorders, that focus on changing faulty behaviors, thoughts, perceptions, and emotions that may be associated with specific disorders.”
Coaching is not therapy.
Therapy deals with dysfunction and trauma: diagnosing a problem and, using the therapist’s expertise and guidance, promoting healing by exploring the past. Emotions are seen as symptoms, and progress may be slow and emotionally painful at times.
Coaching, on the other hand, is focused on the present and future. According to Tony Robbins… “Life coaching is a process which may be long- or short-term. In life coaching, a client works with a coach… in order to clarify goals and identify obstacles to success and problematic behaviors in order to create action plans to achieve desired results. It takes the client’s current starting point as an acceptable neutral ground and is more action-based from that point onward.”   » see more
